Where Do You Find Your Identity?
Hello,
So I'm very surprised at all the views that I've received so far, and am super excited about this!
Thank you for taking the time to read what I have to say and I hope you didn't find your time wasted.
Today while I was setting tables at work (yes this detail is necessary lol) I somehow got to thinking about where I...and just people in general...find my identity. Ultimately, of course it's in Christ, however, it's, also, in a sense, found in who I am and how I choose to spend my time and how I spend my money etc. I firmly believe that my temporary identity (those things which pertain to this world rather than eternity) should reflect my eternal identity and God.
I think that most people can tell that I'm saved by grace from how I act and the kind of person I am and if they don't know that that's what sets me apart, at least they can tell that I'm somehow different than the rest of this world.
I'm in general a very bubbly, loud, happy, and therefore smiley person. I am almost always talking or laughing, or both, and get excited over things that most people would find mundane. I, also, think some people might wonder how I managed to not fully grow out of the "why" stage as I'm now nearly 20! haha! My constant working companion has often told me that "curiosity killed the cat," to which I typically reply that, "I'm not a cat!" But seriously, yo, what's wrong with being curious? Learning things keeps your brain active right? Though in perfect seriousness, all these things might make me seem a bit like a child who has no care in the world, but to be happy and enjoy myself. This is partially true yet at the same time false. I do have worries and hardships (there will probably be more than a couple posts about them in the future) and have struggled with depression in the past, however, I have a joy that I can not explain and in my mind, why not make the most of life and have FUN while doing it!...I tend to annoy a few co-workers from time to time by asking if they're having fun scrubbing pans, cutting fruit, setting tables, etc., but to me, it's an honest question! I may not ALWAYS have fun and at times, can be pretty miserable, but hey, that's normal, right?
I feel I may have gotten a tad off topic here so let's reel it back in...basically, my point is that although the characteristics in the above paragraph are things people use to define who I am, I'm a Christian first and those are just ripple effects of His light, love, joy, and peace overflowing from my heart. My question to all of you is, where do you find YOUR identity? How would people describe you and what characteristics would they say define who you are? Do they align with who God wants you to be or do you look more like the world? I'm not asking this to be mean or make you feel bad about yourself and who you are, but honestly think about it. If you do not share my belief in God you can still ask your self the first two questions because it's always good to examine ourselves and find areas we need to improve and change.
In some areas of our lives there are fine lines between the world and how we live as Christians and it's ultimately between you and God to decide what you feel is right for you (and if you're a parent, for your family), but at the same time, those who don't know Him should be drawn to us (and ultimately Him) because we have something they don't and therefore set apart.
My favorite solo artist is Lecrae (if you like rap look him up he's AMAZING!) and he has a song called Identity which is one of my favorite songs of all time and came to mind when I got the sudden idea for this blog post. The chorus says: I'm not the shoes I wear/ I'm not the clothes I buy/I'm am not the house I live in/I'm not the car I drive, no/I'm not the job I work/You can't define my worth/By nothing on God's green earth/my identity is found in Christ.
I hope that this post made you think a little bit about how you are representing yourself, I know I did just thinking about it earlier, as well as while I was writing this. I, also, hope that you didn't find it too, "all over the place" and therefore that it made sense. :)
I hope you all continue to have a beautiful weekend.
Until next time!
